    Episodic accretion in binary protostars emerging from self-gravitating solar mass cores

    Observations show a large spread in the luminosities of young protostars, which are frequently explained in the context of episodic accretion. We here test this scenario using numerical simulations following the collapse of a solar mass molecular cloud using the GRADSPH code, varying the strength of the initial perturbations and the temperature of the cores. A specific emphasis of this paper is to investigate the role of binaries and multiple systems in the context of episodic accretion, and to compare their evolution to the evolution in isolated fragments. Our models form a variety of low mass protostellar objects including single, binary and triple systems with binaries more active in exhibiting episodic accretion than isolated protostars. We also find a general decreasing trend for the average mass accretion rate over time, suggesting that the majority of the protostellar mass is accreted within the first 10^5 years. This result can potentially help to explain the surprisingly low average luminosities in the majority of the protostellar population.Comment: 16 pages, 13 figures, 4 tables.     The role of oxygen in the vertical distribution of nematodes: an experimental approach

    The role of oxygen in the vertical distribution of nematodes was investigated by means of an experiment in which different oxygen conditions were imposed on sediment from an intertidal area of the Oosterschelde (The Netherlands). To test our hypothesis that the vertical distribution of the nematode assemblages was not influenced by changing oxygen conditions (e.g. nematodes do not migrate to favourable oxygen conditions), 5 cm sediment was inversed and incubated for 5 days at the lab. In a first treatment, food (diatoms) was added to the bottom; in a second treatment oxygen and food were added to the bottom. For each case and a control treatment, fresh, well-aerated Oosterschelde water was added on top of the sediment. The analysis of the field situation showed that nematodes were the most abundant taxon. Highest densities were observed in the subsurface sediment layer (1-2 cm). The lower abundance in the oxygen and algae-rich superficial layer (0-0.5 cm) could be due to the time of sampling relative to the tides or to biotic factors (e.g. macrofaunal activity). The vertical distribution of the nematode assemblages in the experimental and control treatments proved to be significantly different. An obvious segregation existed between the nematode species assemblage from the superficial (0-0.2cm) and the deeper layers (0.2-1 cm and 4-5 cm). Characterising genera for the superficial sediment layers were Daptonema, Ptycholaimellus, Prochromadorella and Microlaimus; for the deeper layers Terschellingia and Microlaimus. The occurrence of the first species assemblage is determined by the presence of free oxygen. The second species assemblage is adapted to the reduced sediment; nevertheless, artificial addition of limited amounts of oxygen to the deeper sediment layers favoured the assemblage as higher abundances were recorded. In general, oxygen seems to be important in determining the vertical distribution of nematodes in this experiment

    Meiofauna and nematode diversity in some Mediterranean subtidal areas of the Adriatic and Ionian Sea

    Sediments of three different subtidal areas (15-705 m depth) of the Italian coasts (Manfredonia, Brindisi and Gallipoli) were investigated to study meiofauna and nematode composition. The nematodes were identified to the genus level and their abundances compared using multivariate analysis. Our data showed an evident depth gradient in meiofauna abundance: the shallowest sites had more diverse and abundant meiobenthic communities than the deeper ones. Nematodes were the dominant taxon (83-100%) at all sites, followed by Copepoda (0.5-8%). Sabatieria, Astomonema, Dorylaimopsis, Terschellingia and Daptonema were among the dominant nematode genera in the three areas. Nematode genus H’ diversities were not significantly dissimilar, though at community level some differences were detected among the study areas. The greatest differences were observed in the comparison of the communities from Manfredonia and Gallipoli. Furthermore, there was a difference between shallow (Astomonema, Dorylaimopsis, Sabatieria and Terschellingia)
